Book Art of the Russian Avant-Garde, 1910–1917

Tango with Cows: Book Art of the Russian Avant-Garde, 1910–1917
http://www.getty.edu/art/exhibitions/tango_with_cows/
Tango with Cows takes its title from a book and poem by the Russian avant-garde poet Vasily Kamensky. The absurd image of farm animals dancing the tango evokes the clash in Russia between a primarily rural culture and a growing urban life. During the years spanning the revolutions of 1905 and 1917, Russia was in spiritual, social, and cultural crisis. The moral devastation of the failed 1905 revolution, the famines of 1911, the rapid influx of new technologies, and the outbreak of World War I led to disillusionment with modernity and a presentiment of apocalypse.
This exhibition explores the way Russian avant-garde poets and artists responded to this crisis through their book art. Often working collaboratively, poets and artists designed pages in which rubber-stamped zaum' or "transrational" poetry shared space with archaic and modern scripts, as well as with primitive and abstract imagery. The Russian avant-garde utilized such verbal and visual disruptions to convey humor, parody and an ambivalence about Russia's past, present, and future.

Lyrebyrd Miniature Print Exchange #4 - Miniprint 2006

Lyrebyrd Miniature Print Exchange #4
2006
Curator: J. Severn
The fourth print australia miniature print exchange is here...
The Print Australia exchang schedule has changed and developed over the years as experience and the list have grown. The first exchange was started in late 1999 and the list was founded in Jan 2000 to facilitate its administration. By 2002 we had several exchanges completed and in 2002 I introduced a miniature print exchange into the PA annual schedule.
The idea was that we needed a simple non-threatening and fun exchange for new and old members to share ideas and get to know one another. I did a lot of research and following on from my experience in designing and introducing a similar exchange on another list, came up with the design for the miniature print exchange.
By making the exchange a direct post between members i wanted to reintroduce the excitement of finding something nice in the letterbox, like xmas cards but without the theology. The earlier exchange had a theme of chinese astrology, I set the print australia miniture print exchange at solstice to give it a non-demoninational ie astonomical due date. It was originally intended to run at june so as not to compete with christmas. This due date was then taken up as the theme and the first exchange was run as a "solstice" exchange. I changed the later exchanges to be open in theme as this was in keeping with the 'experimental' format.
By making the size small, the prints are similar to 'samples' of print techniques, or of an individual's work. The other Print Australia exchanges are more formal in requirements, the miniprint is meant to be completely open to give members freedom to experiment. Eg. we had one print that arrived screenprinted on wetsuit fabric. The prints are miniature prints that are postcard sized at 4 x 6 inches, this is not an exchange of 'postcards'.
It is designed to be an icebreaker. The prints have to be accompanied by a colophon and the requirement is that the technique be discussed onlist. Both the colophon and onlist discussion are normal features of PA exchanges . The colophon is a requirement for inclusion in the PA archives at wagga wagga regional art gallery and the discussion is to build the sense of community.
the exchange has been very successful and fulfilled its designed role well.

"Just so you know what we are talking about here, print australia runs an annual miniature print exchange which is just concluding. The idea behind the exchange is that it is an informal exchange of prints and an opportunity to experiment and share your techniques. An archival set of the prints is collected and donated to the print collection at Wagga Wagga gallery.
To make it more interesting, we avoided sending the prints through one coordinator, instead each person mails out the prints directly to the others, much as you would send out xmas cards. We set the timing for the solstice, partly to make it a holiday event and partly because it was my intention to make it a twice yearly event if it was successful. I'd be happy to introduce the June solstice exchange if we had demand. Just let me know....
The theme is open, though many people take 'solstice' as their subject, and the media is open.
congratulations to all the participants, an excellent body of work
and a good time was had by all!

I am honoured to be recieving wonderful prints in exchange and its like presents (presence!) in the mailbox everytime ... Thankyou everyone involved...I'm looking forward to the next! Joanna
Thanks to everyone who has sent prints so far, they're wonderful. Cheers Theresa
Thanks to everyone who participated in the exchange... you've made it a treat to check the mail these past few months. Julie C. Sparks
Thank you to all who have sent their prints, it has been a real joy to find such wonderful work in my letterbox over the past number of months. Will sure miss them when they stop coming. .... SSNW04 was a wonderful experience. The excitement at finding an artwork in my letterbox from another printmaker has encouraged me to sign up for the Non Toxic Experimental Exchange. ...I do avidly read the Print Australia posts. I find the information offered invaluable and interesting, enhancing my understanding of printmaking processes. Rosanna
I want to thank you all for the lovely prints that have found their way to me. Sylvia
I joined the group to gain a sense of connectedness to whats happening in the wide world of printmaking and to motivate me to print and learn as much as I can.... which is where the exchanges come in... the BEST way to develop editioning skills...I was in the SSNW04 exchange and It was a fantastic experience... I treasure the prints I have received from everyone - everyones passion for everything print and art related and the willingness to share all those wonderful sites of info has been invaluable...thanks! Jo
Print Australia HAS changed my life! Instead of being driven to blissful distraction by images I could paint or sculpt, I now give 70% of that 'air'time to Printmaking. I'm supposed to be working here at my desk in the family business and instead I want to tell you of my plans for more woodengravings! more woodcuts! my dream of owning a press! .... Mellissa

We are staging a Fringe exhibition called 'The Printmaker's Art' at a gallery in the Hills just outside Adelaide (20 minutes drive) ... opening on Feb 21.
The Fringe exhibition (21 Feb - 14 March) is going to be the Metal Exchange, plus work of South Australian printmakers, with lots of explanations about how the prints were made for the enlightenment of the general public. There will be talks and demos during the exhibition, as well as the postcard exchange workshops.
It will take place at the Rowland Rees Gallery, an old community hall, local heritage listed, in Summertown, a small settlement in the beautiful Adelaide Hills, but only 20 minutes from the City. I may not have room to show all the Metal Exchange prints in frames, but the plan is to show them in folios otherwise, and I will show my other postcard collections from the Year of the Snake and the Year of the Horse in folders.
Adelaide Fringe Postcard Exchange
Curated by Julia Wakefield for the Adelaide Fringe 2004
"To reiterate, during our Fringe exhibition we will be inviting members of the public to have a go at printing a postcard, signing it, and sending it to one of our participating printmakers. We are hoping that these kind and friendly printmakers will post a limited edition postcard back to the sender. The idea is to get Fringe visitors actively involved in printmaking, and if they have the added bonus of receiving an original print in return for their own first-time effort, they'll appreciate printmaking even more, and either start collecting prints or start learning to do it for themselves."

The Printmaker's Art
Biography
'The Printmaker's Art' is an exhibition designed by printmakers, which aims to explain the complex world of contemporasry printmaking in a number of different and exciting ways. The Rowland Rees Gallery is the only visual arts venue that is dedicated to the local Hills community, represented by the East Torrens Community Arts Association. The Association has joined with a number of established South Australian printmakers to present this special exhibition.
There will be prints on display by more than forty printmakers, providing first-class examples of the huge variety of print media that are in use today. In addition to the South Australian works, there will be displays of experimental print exchanges initiated via the Internet, involving participants from all over the world. Of particular interest is the first
showing of a new exchange coordinated by the Print Australia website, which exists to promote communication between professional printmakers, not only in Australia, but worldwide. (Metal Plate Exchange)
And there will be opportunities for visitors to experiment for themselves. Workshops leading up to the exhibition, and drop-in workshops to be held during the exhibition, will enable people to try out some of the simpler printmaking techniques. You will be able to print your own Fringe postcard, and participate in an international postcard exchange. (Adelaide Fringe Postcard Exchange) There will also be artists' talks and demonstrations.

About Print Australia
" Some of us have been at it for years, but we're all beginners when it comes to new techniques. I started printmaking in the bad old days when everything was toxic, and no-one had heard of print exchanges. I did a refresher printmaking course a few years back in the UK, but after I discovered Print Australia I found there was so much I didn't know, and it was so much easier to find the answers now I had access to so many experts on different techniques. I liken it to the Open University of Printmaking - without having to write essays. Julia "

I just have to say how much I am enjoying the SSNW exchange- a truely wonderful experience. Every print is so incredibly beautiful and unique. Thanks to all who took the trouble to send prints out to me. They've really brightened up a really damp and dismal end to the year. Andy English
Although our weather 'down under' doesn't need brightening (it's supposed to reach 29 degrees today) the postcards have been a highllight over the Christmas season. The expectation that there will be another beautiful print in the letter box is akin to the "hidden treasure" phonomemon. I'm very pleased that I was able to participate in this exchange. Due Date : August 31st 2005
Details I
Thu Jan 06 2005 : The Next Exchange
"The last exchanges were themed on subject and open as to technique. This time the theme is technique and the subject matter is open, with the usual proviso that the prints must be created specifically for this exchange.
The idea is that the prints be made using new (non-toxic) methodologies. Eg acrylic grounds, ferric rather than nitric, waterless litho and so on. As a rough guide, follow Keith Howard, Nik Semenof, Henrik Boegh and similar publications. ...
It is a requirement that the prints must be accompanied with a detailed description of the processes used, for educational and comparative purposes.
We need to review the current international postal rates so that we can inform you what the return postage (participation fee) will be.
THe next email I send will be an 'expression of interest' form, if you want to participate, please fill it in and reply to the list. That helps me administratively.
Thats all for now

New Year Card Exchange 2000 -2007

In Nov 1999, having heard of the Japanese tradition of a new year card exchange from another printmaker, I introduced the idea to the {baren} list and initiated the annual new year card exchange. It was initially co-ordinated by Pete Walls and myself in 2000, with the exchange documentation appearing on the newly formed Print Australia Website.
I participated in Jan 2000. 2001, & 2002, after which I left the {Baren} list.

Print Australia ran its first annual miniature print exchange in Dec 2002, which continues as the Lyrebyrd Miniature Print Exchange. This was designed in a similar format to the new year card exchange, but improved with modifications.

Baren Forum began sponsoring its annual New Year's Card Exchange for the 2000 new year and has continued this popular exchange in each subsequent year. The exchange prints are to be designed around that year's Chinese Zodiac Animal. Each year, members sign up by providing their name and mailing address, then print and mail a card to every other participant by mid-February of the new year. Prints should be about 4 x 6 inches () and may be in any media (not limited to woodblock). There is no 'moderator' -- you are on your honor to mail a print to each person on the list just as each of them are on their honor to mail one to you.

Sacred Tree Print Exchange: "From Myth to Interpretation"
Contributed and organized by member Arafat Al-Naim
In the city of Veliko Turnovo Municipality Art Gallery, Bulgaria and as a part of The International Ecofestival Veliko Turnovo 2000 The Sacred Tree Print Exchange Exhibition will take place from the 6th to 29th of October.
The Australian artist printmaker Josephine Severn was the initiator of this idea. The exhibition will showcase the print works of 26 artists from 4 continents that shared with each other different myths and interpretations of this theme. The exhibited works explore the richness of printmaking in different countries. This exhibition comes to emphasize print exchanging forms and to expand traditional means of creativity, exchanging experience, information, and art works between printmaking artists from different parts of the world.
Diana Draganova, art critic, historian and expert of contemporary art from the National Art Gallery Sofia, is going to introduce the exhibition. Draganova said that transmitting myths from one culture to another and artists meeting in this exhibition is a kind of dialogue and varied personal interpretation in spite of differences. A catalogue including the exhibited print works is going to be printed and sent to cultural institutions around the world.

Sacred Trees and Endangered Species Exhibit
by Gayle Wohlken
A couple Octobers ago two of my woodcuts (one each from exchanges I participated in through Print Australia and Barenforum) won first prize in a local juried art show, and one of those prints stirred the interest of opening night attendee, Robert McCullough, park commissioner for the Geauga County Park District in northeast Ohio. In talking to me about Vilja, my print from the PA Sacred Trees exchange, he discovered that through my memberships in both forums I was in possession of whole collections of themed prints and he wondered if I would be interested in showing my Sacred Trees collection at the Meyer's Center Gallery at Big Creek Park in Charon, Ohio.

Print Exchanges
Brought to you by Print Australia
We are proud to announce our first 'fun' exchange for PA members. The format is a postcard, in envelope, and will be an annual event. Each person will receive a list of participants. Use it like your Christmas card list, one card per person and one for the PA archives please. As it is a fun exchange these do not have to be editioned prints. The fun part is receiving the postcards in your mailbox over a period of weeks.
Subject: Solstice - when the sun is the furthest from the equator... eg December (22) and June (21) approximately.... (Quote: Collins Australian Pocket English Dictionary) Known as Summer and Winter Solstice or Winter and Summer Solstice!
Size: Postcard 6" x 4" or 15cm x 9.5cm ( Please send in an envelope)
Medium: Any traditional technique but no computer generated ones please (this time)
Participation fee: None
Time for Completion: ASAP (As soon as possible) but if you sign up it is your responsibility to fulfill your obligation! Please try to get them all in the post before 1st March 2003.
If you post them around Christmas you could perhaps sneak them through the post at Christmas Postage Rates, too!!! Shhhhhhhh!
Exchange Rules:
* Would members who would like to be included in this exchange please email Jan.
* The co-ordinator will make up a list of names and addresses and send them via email only to those people listed on this exchange list. To protect your privacy, please do not post your address to the Print Australia mailing list.
* Postcards (in envelopes) are to be sent to each individual participant, not to the co-ordinator.

New Year Card Exchange

year of the horse
Print Australia History: The Early Years
New Year Card Exchange
In Nov 1999, having heard of the Japanese tradition of a new year card exchange from another printmaker, I introduced the idea to the {baren} list and initiated the annual new year card exchange.
Baren Forum began sponsoring its annual New Year's Card Exchange for the 2000 new year and has continued this popular exchange in each subsequent year. The exchange prints are to be designed around that year's Chinese Zodiac Animal. It was initially co-ordinated by Pete Walls in 2000, with the exchange documentation appearing on the newly formed Print Australia Website.
http://barenforum.org/new_year/index.html
I participated in Jan 2000. 2001, & 2002, after which I left the {Baren} list.Josephine has set up an awesome website dedicated to the exchange.
http://web.archive.org/web/20010406134044/www.acay.com.au/~severn/Dcards.htm
Print Australia ran its first annual miniature print exchange in Dec 2002, which continues as the Lyrebyrd Miniature Print Exchange. This was designed in a similar format to the new year card exchange, but improved with modifications.

Hi Again
I dont know if this is OK to do but this came in the mail today and I am
forwarding it to Baren. If its not OK I'll apologise in advance. I guess
many of you will have seen this already?
I dont know much about JApanese culture but this sounds like such a
lovely thing to do. Sort of the old fashioned spirit of Christmas that I
though was dead or killed by crass commercialism.
Just wanted to share a nice thought with you..
Josephine
In Japan there is a tradition of exchanging New Years cards that are hand
made and the size of a postcard, 4" x 6". Each year everyone makes an image
of the animal that belongs to that year, dog, monkey, etc. This New Year it
is the Dragon for 2000. What a great mythic animal for the beginning of the
next century. Last summer Moya Bligh, a part time printmaking instructor
from Kyoto-Seika University in Japan, was teaching a workshop in Japanese
waterbase woodcut printmaking here at the Univ. of Oregon. (I hosted her
and taught with her.) She talked about this tradition and invited my print
students to make dragon postcards to exchange with each other and with
students in Japan. Each person will then have a little collection of dragon
prints. My students are having such a great time making these prints (not
in a limited edition) that I thought it might be fun to suggest this
exchange to the print list.
I don't know exactly how the exchange could or should be done but each
person making a card could make as many as they like and somehow contact
others making them to arrange for an exchange of cards. Is this idea just
too unmanageable? What do you think of the idea and do you have any
suggestions about how the exchange could be done?

If y'all want to, I'd be willing to set up a little web page that has a bunch

anyone is interested, that is. I guess just e-mail me your name and address.

This is the list of names and addresses of the [Baren] members who are interested in participating in the Dragon New Year's Card Exchange. This is an informal kind of set-up, so mailing, postage, organization, etc. is all up to the participants. This page exists so that you'll know where to send your stuff.
To get your name added to the list, click here.
Josephine has set up an awesome website dedicated to the exchange. Click here to check it out.

Also, some other info:
-The suggested size for the cards is 4"x6"
-Try to get them mailed on or around the actual New Year (duh!); having the 2000 postmark might be nifty
-You can stick them in an envelope or do it postcard-style
-The last day I will add names to the list is December 31st (New Year's Eve) sometime in the morning here on the West Coast

year of the snake
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Date: Sat, 14 Oct 2000
To: Print Australia
Subject: New Exchange
Hi All
While I was on holidays I decided that Print Australia would
have another card exchange similar to the Dragon card
exchange in which I participated last year and which can be
seen at
http://www.acay.com.au/~severn/dcards.htm
http://web.archive.org/web/20010406134044/www.acay.com.au/~severn/Dcards.htm
However, the people over at Baren have decided to go with it
again and are organising a "year of the snake' card
exchange. Details can be seen at
http://www.geocities.com/pedrobot2000/snake.html
So after some deliberation I have decided NOT to do one
through Print Australia as most of you are on BAren anyway,
and instead am passing on the invitation for you to
particpate in the Snake Card exchange.
This was a huge amount of fun last year. You send out cards
to everyone's home address and your letterbox fills up with
envelopes from exotic places, each containing a little hand
made print!
The exchange is not restricted to woodblock, all media other
glicee/digital prints are acceptable. It might be a courtesy
if you are not already a baren member to go join baren
first.
