Impact 7 - Melbourne

IMPACT 7
International Multi-disciplinary Printmaking Conference
27 - 30 September 2011
Monash University, Melbourne Australia

http://www.impact7.org.au

IMPACT 7: Intersections & Counterpoints will focus on the multiple identity of the print, exploring the cross-disciplinary nature of printmedia internationally and in the context of the Asia-Pacific region. Printmedia will be explored as a heterogeneous, diverse and all pervading aspect of contemporary culture. Often located at the intersections of disciplines and media, it is also a powerful political vehicle, generating discourse and debate by virtue of its wide dissemination and ability to offer counterpoints to the norm. The conference addresses practitioners, writers, critics, artists, theorists, and others working in the broad fields of print-related research. It aims to provide a platform in which practitioners and researchers can engage in a mutually productive exchange. Media identified by the conference will include but not be limited to:

Printmaking, Photography, Graphic Design, Architecture, Drawing, The Artist’s Book, Text, Animation, Film and Digital Media, Jewellery and Metalsmith, Glass, Ceramic and Textile

Curatorial Practices Conference

Conference
16 -18 April 2009
Artspace

Spaces of Art
An international conference on institutional / post-institutional curatorial and related practices in contemporary art
Convenors: Reuben Keehan and Blair French

In April 2009 Artspace will bring together key figures in current debates on institutional / post-institutional practices in contemporary art from Asia, Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand in a two and half day conference at Artspace and the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

Within recent curatorial debates, the term ‘new institutionalism’ has described a tendency toward the incorporation of the principles of institutional critique into institutional practice. Particularly visible in Europe, the new institutionalism has its origins of the shift of key independent curators into directorial roles in the late 1990s, but also in the perceived need for galleries and museums to provide a more sympathetic platform for the increasingly participatory, process-based and self-reflexive practices of contemporary art. With its emphasis on transience, open-endedness and social experiment, and its placement of discursive activities such as education and publishing on equal footing with the more conventional exhibition function of galleries, the new institutionalism draws as much from the working methods of artist-run initiatives as it does from social and cultural theory.

The past few years have seen this tendency widely discussed and just as widely critiqued, resulting in emergent discourses that might be characterised as ‘post-institutional’. Rather than simply rehearsing these accounts of the new institutionalism, however, Spaces of Art will instead seek to use it as the platform from which a series of questions about current institutional practices may be asked at three overlapping levels—globally, regionally and locally—with a specific focus on their potential to inform artistic and curatorial strategies in Australia and the Asia-Pacific.

Participants include: EMMA BUGDEN (Director, Artspace, Auckland); CLAIRE DOHERTY (Curator and Senior Research Fellow, Situations Program, University of West England, Bristol); ANTHONY GARDNERHEEJIN KIM (Curator, International Projects, Insa Art Space, Seoul); LEE WENG CHOY (Co-artistic Director, Substation, Singapore); MARIA LIND (Director, Graduate Program, Center for Curatorial Studies and Art in Contemporary Culture, Bard College, New York); SIMON MAIDMENT (Director, Satellite, Melbourne); HANNAH MATHEWS (Independent Curator, Melbourne); NINA MÖNTMANN (Hamburg-based independent curator; Professor and Head of Department of Art Theory and the History of Ideas at the Royal University College of Fine Arts [KKH] in Stockholm); AARON SEETO (Artist, Director Gallery 4A, Sydney); and SIMON SHEIKH (Berlin-based critic, curator; Assistant Professor of Art Theory and a Coordinator of the Critical Studies Program, Malmö Art Academy in Sweden). More to be confirmed.

Full conference details and registration forms available from Artspace and online at www.artspace.org.au from late February 2009.

'Save the Net' II

The Australian Federal Government is pushing forward with a plan to force Internet Service Providers [ISPs] to censor the Internet for all Australians. This plan will waste tens of millions of taxpayer dollars and slow down Internet access.

Despite being almost universally condemned by the public, ISPs, State Governments, Media and censorship experts, Communications Minister Stephen Conroy is determined to force this filter into your home.

ANAT urges all Australians to join in the protest against the plan.

==========

It would be impossible for any one exhibition to survey an international crossection of "the most exceptional printmaking today", even a virtual one. It would, however, be interesting to take a survey of who these artist/printmakers might be.

Who would you include, and why? Please comment.

UP FOR ADOPTION

Galleries the world over have works in their collections that cannot be put on show because they need conservation treatment and/or new frames. Inevitably, only those needed for immediate display are given priority, which means that other equally valued works are forced to languish in storage until funding and time can be found for treatment.

Auckland Art Gallery is following the lead set by Dulwich Picture Gallery in London, and placing a group of paintings, sculptures and frames UP FOR ADOPTION, including works from the Mackelvie Trust Collection as the Gallery is responsible for their care. We are asking members of the public to sponsor works in need of treatment, and individuals or groups are welcome to take part.

In return, your name will appear on exhibition labels when the works are displayed. Mary Kisler, Mackelvie Curator, International Art will be available to discuss the significance of the work you want to adopt, and you will have an opportunity to meet with the conservator responsible to hear about the treatment process; receive a report summary; and a photograph of the finished work and frame. When the Gallery re-opens, a special event will be held to thank you and your fellow contributors.

We hope these works will find their way into your hearts.

If you are interested in adopting an artwork. Please choose an artwork and click the link to submit an enquiry.

Alternatively you may view works up for adoption in the Auckland Art Gallery, on the 1st floor, in the exhibition Passion and Politics: Two Centuries of British Art. You can also instantly adopt an artwork through the Gallery shop.

For more information about the Up For Adoption scheme please email, upforadoption@aucklandartgallery.govt.nz

Australia's convict heritage

Port Arthur Historic Site (Tasman Peninsula)

Australia's convict heritage goes global

The Australian Government, in partnership with relevant state and territory governments, is preparing a nomination for World Heritage listing of 11 of Australia's convict sites as an exceptional example of the global story of forced migration.

The sites that are expected to be collectively nominated for the World Heritage List are:

  • New South Wales: Old Government House (Parramatta in Sydney), Hyde Park Barracks (Sydney), Cockatoo Island Convict Site (Sydney) and Great North Road (near Wiseman's Ferry)
  • Norfolk Island: Kingston and Arthur's Vale Historic Area
  • Tasmania: Port Arthur Historic Site (Tasman Peninsula), Cascades Female Factory Site (Hobart), Darlington Probation Station (Maria Island), Coal Mines Historic Site (via Premadeyna) and Brickendon-Woolmers Estates (near Longford)
  • Western Australia: Fremantle Prison

The Department of the Environment and Heritage welcomes comments from interested groups and individuals on the 11 places that form the Australian convict sites nomination. Please contact: WHConvicts@deh.gov.au

======================

Port Arthur Historic Site was one of the places we visited this month.

It cost $25 each to get in. This included

- Site entry fee, {some of the buildings were closed}.
- An interactive exhibiton {disney ride} which we didnt do. It would be suitable for keeping school tours entertained.
- A 45 minute tour which we also didnt do. If you wanted the audio gude self tour it cost extra.
- A ferry ride to the island, which we didnt do. If you wanted to get off and see the island, that cost extra, and you were given an allocated time to take the cruise which didnt necessarily suit.

We would have preferred the choice to select which components of the site entry we actually wanted to see and pay for.

This card set was on display in the governer's house. Can anyone identify it and provide any information please?
