Degenerate Art

Entartete Kunst or Degenerate Art Exhibition of 1937

“DEGENERATE ART: A POWERFUL STORY OF THE NAZIS' VILIFICATION OF THE AVANT-GARDE AND THEIR ATTACK ON MODERN CULTURE,”

Directed by David Grubin and narrated by David McCullough, this program examines the infamous Entartete Kunst (degenerate art) exhibition mounted by the Nazis in Munich in 1937

(with some commentary by Robert Hughes)

"The exhibit opened in Munich and then traveled to eleven other cities in Germany and Austria. In each installation, the works were poorly hung and surrounded by graffiti and hand written labels mocking the artists and their creations. Over three million visitors attended making it the first "blockbuster" exhibition. "

====================

In Munich, Julien Bryan documented the spirited Nazi assault on modern art when he visited the infamous and popular Entartete Kunst [Degenerate Art] exhibition. This exhibition featured over 650 paintings, sculptures, prints, and books which had been confiscated from German public museums, including the works of some important 20th century artists like Marc Chagall, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Emil Nolde, Georg Grosz, and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner. The pieces were chaotically hung with accompanying criticism and derisive text, in order to clarify to the German people what type of art was considered unacceptable. Afterwards, many works were sorted out for sale and sold at auction. Some were acquired by museums, and others by private collectors. Certain pieces were appropriated by Nazi officials and some were burned. Josef Goebbels ordered a more thorough scouring of German art collections after the exhibition, bringing the total number of modern works seized by the Nazis to over 16,000.

Twente Biënnale

Twente Biënnale International Art Festival
London --- Hengelo --- Berlin ---------------- Moscow

12 - 22 mei - 2011 - Hengelo NL - The best international art and talent from the East of the Netherlands on 3 ha of industrial heritage in the heart of Twente.

Twente Biënnale addresses current affairs in a post 9/11 society and the contemporary culture of the all encompassing presence of mass media. Addressed topics are, among others, the changing cultural identity and political ideology, the ever-faster growing technology, but also the social meaning of the visual arts circa 2011.

Information

Twente Biënnale is a new event with a challenging and controversial program of contemporary art, taking place on 3 ha industrial heritage near the centre of Hengelo. The best international art is found side by side with talent from the East of The Netherlands: from established artists to art students.
Twente Biënnale is mainly taking place in and around the former factory halls of Hazemijer Holec, a 20th century producer of heavy electrical switch-boxes and measuring equipment. Several years ago the terrain was renamed Creatieve Fabriek (creative factory) and got a new destination as a hotbed for art, culture and creative economy. The new foundation Hazartfactory is a platform organising events such as the Twente Biënnale, Power-Up Gaming Festival and Pecha Kucha Nights on the terrain.

Fairey on Kruger

"Barbara Kruger might not be a name you know, but you probably know her work and/or the many stylistic imitations she has inspired. She is one of my biggest influences. My OBEY type logo and the Supreme logo were inspired by Kruger's work. I owe my red, black, and white color palette to Russian Constructivism and Barbara Kruger. When I first started doing street art In the late 80's and early 90's I saw countless knock-offs of Kruger's style for college campus political statements and posters of dissent. Kruger's style was eye catching and seemed to universally say "pay attention and take this seriously"."

Lucid” at Primary Projects, 4141 N.E. 2nd Ave., suite 104, Design District; www.primaryflight.com.

Schmidt is one of two artists highlighted in the latest show at the new space opened by several artists from the graffiti collective Primary Flight (Typoe, Books IIII Bischof and Chris O) in the Design District, this one called “Lucid.” She had in fact worked here in Miami with a Fountainhead residency, so some of her scenes are of Miami avenues, along with those of her native Hamburg.

Schmidt calls her artworks urbanscapes—they refer to places that generate themselves from nonplaces, she says, from the transit zones of the city, traffic interchanges, road systems, crossroads and deserted old industrial brick buildings.

Guerilla Art - ABC2

Its interesting to note that the ABC is now finally starting to cover the art that I have been reporting on for the last five years. Aunty is starting to catch up, or maybe they just read my blogs. Most of the artists in this documentary have already been featured on Blakkbyrd blog.
BLAKKBYRD

ABC2 link

A new generation of international street artists are the latest hot property for galleries, art collectors and big advertising brands.

Filmed in New York, London, Paris, Sao Paulo and Tokyo, it introduces the graffiti-inspired street art pioneers Futura 2000, Ramm:ell:zee, Os Gemeos, Space Invader, Blek le Rat, Miss Van and Eine, some whose art is now celebrated among the trendy and wealthy of New York and London.

The movement started in the late ‘70s when hip hop and the spray can emerged from the lanes and backstreets and spread like a virus across the urban landscapes of the rest of the world. Art patron Agnes B and art curator Jerome Sans comment on the early days of Keith Haring and Jean Michel Basquiat, when graffiti changed the streets of New York and then of other cities around the planet.

It reveals how these artists have developed a unique system of economic survival, from selling limited-edition prints to clothing designs for streetwear labels and creating record labels and logos for youth brands.

Guerilla Art will be repeated on ABC1 – Sunday, November 08 at 3:00pm

asylum seekers - Melbourne

The art in Hosier Lane, Melbourne is constantly changing. This is one of the last photos I took in my recent visit to Melbourne. The work was freshly installed. The name of the artist is not known, but I suspect from the size of the hands that it is a female.

Sticky tape sculpture is not new in street art, but what I liked about this piece was its timeliness with respect to the asylum seeker debate currently ongoing in the media. Street art is inherently political.

For me, a measure of success of street art is that it must work in relation to its installed position. If you move it and it loses its context, then its good street art. This piece fulfills that criteria. The reading of the art lies in its relation to the iron bars from behind which the fragile and nameless hands entreat.

Well done.

JR in Paris - Interview

JR Interview

Women are Heroes” is a project and an exhibition by the artist JR that coincided with this year’s Nuit Blanche in Paris, France.

Nuit Blanche - In english

For the Women are Heroes project, JR has been traveling to such countries as Kenya, Liberia and Sierra Leone, to take portraits of more than 70 women around the world. It’s the third phase of his 28 Millimetre project, taking its name from the wide-angle lens he uses. Around the Ile Saint-Louis, JR and his team pasted up portraits, studies and other photos from the Women project in huge formats on bridges, the embankments and a City of Paris building. JR conceived a “Street Audio Guide” system that enables passers-by to dial a free number from their mobile phones, to hear interviews with portrayed women and their life-stories.

VernissageTV correspondent Christophe Ecoffet met JR during the installation of his large scale photographs in Paris. In this video, JR talks about his work in general and the concept behind his current installation in Paris.

The open air installation around the Ile Saint-Louis is on display from October 3 to November 2, 2009. An exhibition with two video installations that look back over the whole project runs until October 23.

Franck Gohier, "Target",
opening at Ray Hughes Gallery
this Friday 24th July, 6-8pm

Franck Gohier’s newest series, Target, directs his attention toward a new set of targets – the economy, environment and the NT intervention among them – with characteristic humour. Pop culture references, classic cartoon illustration and razor-sharp wit are the bullets in his gun.
“In my studio I appropriate the first comic book image I see that speaks to me. I then paint about the first subject that the image suggests on an instinctive level ......and so the painting develops. Chance and necessity......the rest is fine tuning.”

Visual Resistance

Visual Resistance is a collective of artists and activists based in New York City that uses art as a tool for social change.

In 2007, we merged with the radical art distro JustSeeds to form a national printmakers’ cooperative. JustSeeds.org features an online store featuring radical prints, books, zines, and posters. It also features a blog on radical culture which is the new online home of our old blog.

=================

Justseeds/Visual Resistance Artists' Cooperative is a decentralized community of artists who have banded together to both sell their work online in a central location and to collaborate with and support each other and social movements. Our website is not just a place to shop, but also a destination to find out about current events in radical art and culture. Our blog covers political printmaking, socially engaged street art, and culture related to social movements. We believe in the power of personal expression in concert with collective action to transform society.

A new exhibit at the Bronx Museum of the Arts, “Making It Together,” celebrates the collaborative efforts of feminist artists from the 1970s and attempts to inspire similar fervor and commitment today.

“Activism is never done,” said Lady Pink, a New York City graffiti artist who collaborated with three other “graffiti girls,” TooFly, Muck and Doña, on a mural featured in the exhibit. “There’s always injustice.

The mural, titled “Activism is Never Over,” depicts activist women such as Elvira Arellano, a Mexican immigrant who founded United Latino Family (a group that lobbies for families at risk of separation because of deportation), and Gloria Steinem, a leading feminist who founded Ms. Magazine in the early 1970s. The painting also pays homage to future activists. A young black girl is featured prominently on the mural in neon green paint, Lady Pink’s optimistic nod to strong young women.

“We’re breeding our daughters to be stronger and tougher,” she said.

Names and facts are painted across the mural as well. “Long Live Benazir Bhutto” is painted in bright green; “150,000 American women die of anorexia each year” is written in large black letters.

The collaboration among the four graffiti artists is in keeping with the theme of the exhibit, in its tribute to feminist artists who used collaborative techniques to produce activist art between 1970 and1985, a time of strength for the feminist movement. Most pieces are from women who worked in Los Angeles or New York, and include videos of theatrical performances, a collage from a protest against sexual violence and issues of “Heresies,” a magazine that was produced by women and featured different views on politics and art.

In the “pink room,” where most of the exhibit is held, guest-curator Carey Lovelace encouraged visitors to think pink.

“Pink was embraced in its full association with femininity,” Lovelace says.

The color features heavily in the main room of the exhibit. One piece, by artist Sheila Levrant de Bretteville, features squares of paper on which various women wrote their thoughts on pink. The responses range from a rejection of the color as being something for “infants” and “old ladies,” to a description of four tubes of rouge, which were all different shades of pink, to a poem chronicling the role of pink in one woman’s life.

The exhibit is unique because it is the first in New York that pays tribute to the innovative art forms created by feminist artists, according to Camille Wanliss, a Bronx Museum spokeswoman.

“It’s something the Bronx has not seen before, but it’s also great for New York City as a whole,” she said.

Visitors to the museum said the exhibit is powerful because of its emphasis on the strength that comes from having a network of strong women.

Leah Coloff, a 42-year-old cellist from Park Slope in Brooklyn, said she feels that the idea of women’s collectives is seen as “quaint” in today’s society, but that she thinks many women would like to have such a network. The work at the exhibit “still resonates for me,” she said. “Some ideas are slipping away and we’re sometimes alienated from each other.”

Lifelong Bronx resident Darcy Curran, 75, praised the intensity of the show.

“It seems to have a great deal to say,” she observed. “It’s shouting to say things to you.”

“Making It Together” opened March 2 and will be on display through Aug 4.

“Highlights of the Permanent Collection: Women Artists” is also on display as a counterpart to “Making It Together.”

The Bronx Museum is at 1040 Grand Concourse. For more information call 718-681-6000 or visit http://www.bronxmuseum.org/exhibitions/current.html.

SIT - Amsterdam

Unwired - Go Gallery

GO Gallery invites you for the opening show of the exhibition UNWIRED,
on Saturday March 29th, from 17.00 until 20.00 hrs.

The exhibition UNWIRED will be on display until the 12 of May 2008.

SIT (Amsterdam, 1976)

http://www.freakinsitnie.nl/

Years ago, Sit, formerly know as Freakin Sitnie, made headlines in the Amsterdam Street-Art scene with his distinct style, sharp lines and obstinate artworks. Inspired by Comic illustrators such as Simon Bisley, Sam Keith, Todd Mcfarlane and Jamie Hewlett, he perfected his own style. He was very successful in a very short time. One could admire his works everywhere, at events, in clubs, from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur.
But he soon realised that this was temporary and a one-way street. Sit wanted more. The Mac had taken over his canvas and the inspiration was limited to what appeared on his screen. That’s when he drew the line. Dissatisfied with our digitally manipulated and superficial society, he went back to the basics.

UNWIRED
Sit had to detoxify from bits and bytes, media, hypes, lovers, haters and colours to find the true essence of creativity again. No more digital drama, no more BS.

UNWIRED is the documented process of his everyday struggle to get unwired. The progress from feeling lost to finding purity. It not only took him a full year to transfer his new found creativity in images, but also to master all sorts of new techniques and a skills. Now he feels he finally has enough work to exhibit, which is a true representation of the new ´Sit´. All is documented in black and white. So, absorb his scratches, sketches, strokes and scrapings. Step into Sit’s world and experience that we are all sick bastards who all wear straitjackets.
So, there you are…finally, UNWIRED!!!

The paintings were black and white and the gallery was festooned with black cable. Its always a pleasure to see an exhibition that features high quality drawing. There was a combination of spray can and palette knife. It was unusual to see such skill with the knife in an artist as young as this.

The images online do little justice to the paintings in the original but shouldn't be missed nethertheless.. http://www.unwired2008.com/

Keith Haring - Lyon

From 22 February to 29 June 2008, the Museum of Contemporary Art of Lyon is presenting one of the biggest exhibitions ever organized in France in homage to Keith Haring, an emblematic figure of the New York art scene of the 1980s, who would have been 50 in 2008.

This exceptional exhibition has been entrusted to the Italian curator Gianni Mercurio and is being organised in close collaboration with the Keith Haring Foundation in New York.

For more information about the exhibition

Partners

The retrospective will be set out in a deliberately nonchronological sequence. The artist's short career, spanning the years from 1980 to 1990, is viewed as a whole. Like Keith Haring in his own work, filling the canvas, putting his art in the most unexpected places, covering even objects and bodies, the exhibition will take over the museum, taking possession of the spaces in order to immerse visitors in the colourful, dynamic and teeming world of this artist.

Let it Rain Umbrella Roadshow 2007

Let it Rain: The Umbrella Road Show
Amsterdam
6th October 2007

Introduction

The "Let it Rain" Umbrella roadshow 2007 is an initiative of the XStreets Collective, an artists' collaboration from Amsterdam and Basel. The curator is IvesOne from Amsterdam. The show is supported by the Blakkbyrd Blog.

An international selection of graffiti artists have created artworks using Umbrellas as canvas. The works were paraded throughout the streets of Amsterdam from the historic Waag in the Nieuwemarkt to the factory refurbished arts centre at the Westergasfabriek, on the 6th October 2007.

In November 2007 the Foamlab, a new arts group associated with the FOAM Museum, invited the show to participate in the Museumnight activities. Museumnight is an annual city wide festival where all the museums are open with nighttime activities and concerts.

Currently the Umbrellas are on exhibition at the Studioshop, in Amsterdam's centrum.

The Umbrella show will be repeated in 2008 with exhibitions planned for both Amsterdam and Basel.
