Sydney Printmakers
With the proliferation of artists producing prints in Australia, it is timely to look at the important contribution of the Sydney Printmakers group, as they celebrate 45 years as a society.
Established as an artist-run project, Sydney Printmakers are a broad community of contemporary practicing artists that actively promote printmaking as a vital form of cultural expression. The current members of the group are involved in all aspects of contemporary printmaking - etching, lithography, relief prints, serigraphs and digital technology - and are active practitioners in the Sydney arts scene.
The exhibition includes the work of artists who are current or former members of the Sydney Printmakers, or who have shown with them by invitation, over the past forty-five years. Many of the prints on display were shown in the Sydney Printmakers annual exhibitions, some the very same impression, while others are representative of the prints artists were making at the time of their involvement with the group. This comprehensive survey presents works by Earle Backen, John Coburn, Margaret Preston, Frank Hinder, Weaver Hawkins, Elizabeth Rooney, Brian Dunlop, Cressida Campbell, Michael Kempson, Ruth Burgess, Helen Mueller, Max Miller, Helen Edwards, Kate Briscoe, Salvatore Gerardi, Pia Larsen, Peter Laverty, Ursula Laverty, Bruce Latimer, Graham Kuo, Graham Marchant, Tom Gleghorn, Ruth Faerber and many more. S.H. Ervin Gallery invited guest curator Anne Ryan - curator, Australian Prints, Art Gallery of New South Wales - to coordinate the exhibition, bringing together 90 works by 68 artists who have exhibited with the group.
