Southern Exchange facilitates cultural exchange activities between people and projects located within and between the traditional and contemporary cultures of Australia, South Africa, and North Asia. We focus on the visual arts and crafts, and work with projects, artists and craftspeople whose work positively contributes to their communities in a sustainable way.

Southern Exchange designs and delivers exhibitions, projects and special commissions to connect people in new and exciting ways. In this way, we aim to enhance mutual understanding through creatively engaging, informative activities.

We actively seek to work with participants from a wide range of sectors - business, government, civil society and the arts - for the purpose of specilaised projects and exhibitions (commercial and public), trading and consulting activities.

Jennie Jackson

Jennie Jackson is currently completing her Doctorate in Visual Arts at the Queensland College of Art. Jackson was highly commended for her work in the 2008 Alice Art Prize and was awared the Theiss Acqusitive Award in 2006.

Jackson is fast becoming recognised for her highly detailed landscapes of mythical forests, engineered from early 19th century fashion plates.

Andy and Oz - NGA

Andy and Oz: parallel visions is the international event to coincide with the National Gallery of Australia’s silver anniversary, marking twenty-five years since the Gallery first opened its doors to the public. A joint initiative between the National Gallery and The Andy Warhol Museum, the exhibition is also taking place in the year that marks twenty years since Warhol’s untimely death. The initial proposal for the show was to select works from the National Gallery’s collection considering the influence of Warhol on Australian artists. This presented some difficulties. Some artists in the national collection clearly have stronger links with Warhol than others. Yet some of the less expected parallels are as intriguing. Therefore, in the selection process with Thomas Sokolowski, Director of The Andy Warhol Museum, the idea of establishing links with Warhol’s art evolved laterally in terms of shared ideas and ways of working, differences of opinion, snapshots of pivotal connections and parallel visions, to enable lively ‘conversations’ between artists’ works to occur.

Impressionist Prints - NGA

Degas’ world: the rage for change is an exhibition of European prints from the National Gallery of Australia’s collection, opens in association with the major exhibition Degas: master of French art.

Featuring prints from the National Gallery of Australia’s very distinguished International Print collection, Degas’ world includes works by some of the late nineteenth century’s most famous artists: Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Mary Cassat, Paul Signac and Pierre Bonnard among others. These artists also exhibited in the revolutionary Impressionist exhibitions between 1874 and 1886 of which Degas was a key instigator. In addition, some of their most influential precursors, such as Camille Corot and Honoré Daumier, are highlighted.

Fair Use images

The Digital Images Collections Wiki is a resource of Free- and Fair-Use digital image collections that are available for anyone to use for personal or educational purposes. The main goals of the project are to provide an image gathering tool for the art history students and faculty of Wellesley College and to supplement the growing visual resources collection of that institution. The wiki was created by Hollin Elizabeth Pagos (MLS student, Simmons College) during a summer 2007 internship in the Visual Resources department of Wellesley College. The project was created in wiki format with the hope that users will continue to add their own bookmarked fair-use galleries and the resource will continue to grow beyond the input of its creator.

The purpose of this project was to collect image galleries that can be used freely for non-profit educational purposes. Some of the websites included, however, have certain restrictions and user requests, such as preferred citing or number of images used. It is the user's responsibility to make sure image use conforms to the policies of the specific gallery.

Summary of information, curatorial text, photo tour through the exhibition

The exhibition is organized by the Goethe-Institut Rio de Janeiro in cooperation with the cultural center Oi Futuro (Rio de Janeiro) and the Biennial of the End of the World (Argentina).

Climatic phenomena, which are being increasingly medialized, need to be "reculturalized" by measuring the aesthetic temperatures of a new feeling for life. However, the kind of aesthetic treatment of weather and landscape we are proposing could possibly contribute more to preserving both than a purely scientific approach.

"In Antiquity, philosophers believed that for reasons of symmetry the southern hemisphere must contain a counterweight to the land mass of the northern hemisphere.

Mercator's 16th century maps also claim the presence of a "large southern continent" (Terra Australis Incognita), which was regarded as a tropical paradise."

Reading the curatorial text, two things spring to mind

- firstly, Australian art has a large engagement with the landscape and the environment and we are experiencing some of our most extreme weather

- secondly, discussion of the 'missing southern continent' has frequently been applied to Australia

So my question is simply, "why are there no Australian artists in this exhibition?"

A Picasso show is always an exciting event. Some exhibitions show Picasso as the great master of twentieth century art, and some exhibits, this one in particular, show Picasso’s lighter side - his simple delight in making images. The variety of the work in this exhibition from his earliest etching, Le Repas Frugal of 1904, to the etchings from 1968, show Picasso’s pictorial curiosity and his extraordinary technical abilities. These images illustrate the story of Picasso’s life, his love and his passion for the human condition.

Drawing - Manifest OHIO

The International Drawing Annual publication was conceived as an extension of Manifest's Drawing Center mission to promote, feature, and explore drawing as a rich and culturally significant art form through the pursuit of scholarly activities.

The goal of the International Drawing Annual is to support the recognition, documentation, and publication of excellent, current, and relevant works of drawing in the United States and beyond.

This supplemental resource website offers biographical information and artist's statements for each of the artists included in each annual volume of the exhibition-in-print. One image from each artist is also provided for reference relative to their information.
