Head On is the nation's leading exhibition showcasing the best Australian portrait photography. Now in its sixth year, the show includes the work of 40 finalists, competing for prizes worth approximately $37000.
This year's competition judges are Magnum photographer Trent Parke, multi award winning photographer Narelle Autio, Good Weekend magazine picture editor Judith Love, and Head On Curator Moshe Rosenzveig. Winners will be announced at the exhibition opening at the Australian Centre for Photography.
The show's main selection criteria are the quality and impact of the image, rather than the celebrity of the photographer or subject. As a result Head On is regarded by many as the most critically important photographic portrait prize in the country.

Jim Coverley close to the skin
British artist Jim Coverley, not yet forty years old, produced troubling flowers. They ressemble orchides, full of scrolled petals, speckled with dark colors. If one looks closer, we notice it is simply old pieces of cloth, folded in a geometric manner and held by tie pins or thick nails. This original origami, that is also reminiscent of the symetric figures of the kaleidoscopes, is always made based on textiles that have been in contact with the skin – sheets, pillow cases, dresses. They have all been used or worn and this lived, sometimes stained, aspect makes these compositions so much more disquieting.
Jim Coverley is exhibited at the Shirman de Beaucé gallery (7 rue de Turenne, 75003 Paris) until 30 May 2009.

Duchamp - Portraits
Inventing Marcel Duchamp: The Dynamics of Portraiture
March 27 through August 2, 2009
National Portrait Gallery
This groundbreaking exhibition casts new light upon Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968), one of the most influential artists of the recent past. This show demonstrates that Duchamp harnessed the power of portraiture and self-portraiture both to secure his reputation as an iconoclast and to establish himself as a major figure in the artworld. In the process, he played a key role in the reinvention of portraiture, exerting a transformative influence from the early 20th century to the present.
The exhibition showcases approximately 100 never-before-assembled portraits and self-portraits of Duchamp ranging from 1912 to the present, including works by his contemporaries Man Ray, Alfred Stieglitz, Francis Picabia and Florine Stettheimer as well as portraits by a more recent generation of artists, such as Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, Sturtevant, Yasumasa Morimura, David Hammons, Beatrice Wood and Douglas Gordon.

Figuring Landscapes is a remarkable collection of moving image works that has grown from the background of the political and cultural history that links the UK and Australia. Presented internationally as a series of screening programmes, the works in Figuring Landscapes address questions of ecological survival, post-industrialism, gender, the touristic gaze, and uniquely in Australia, the social, political and cultural status of Indigenous people in a post-colonial society.

Marlene Dumas: Measuring Your Own Grave
December 14, 2008-February 16, 2009
The Museum of Modern Art, New York
This exhibition of the work of the acclaimed painter Marlene Dumas, the first of its scale to be mounted in the United States, is organized by The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, in association with The Museum of Modern Art. The exhibition includes approximately seventy paintings and thirty-five drawings, providing a comprehensive examination of the work of one of the most thought-provoking and fascinating artists working today. The exhibition opens with Dumas's earliest mature works from the late 1970s. While loosely chronological, it will also reflect Dumas's tendency to work in series, with key paintings grouped together. Through her focus on the human figure, Dumas merges themes of race, sexuality, and social identity with personal experience and art-historical antecedents to create a unique perspective on important and controversial issues of the day. The exhibition provides an opportunity to trace these themes over the course of the artist's career, and also provides access to paintings and drawings of extraordinary technical quality. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue.
=======
James Kalm trips to Midtown’s Museum of Modern Art to witness the North American debut of Marlene Dumas “Measuring Your Own Grave”. Dumas (1953) have received increasing attention for her heartfelt and sensitive renditions of “the pageantry of the human condition”. In 2005, one of her paintings was auctioned at Christie’s London for $3.34 million, establishing her as the highest priced living female artist. Between the prices, and Dumas racially charged erotic and off kilter depictions, she has become a favorite target of comments within the cultural media. Louise Bourgeois: Film
Louise Bourgeois: The Spider, the Mistress and the Tangerine is a cinematic journey inside the life and imagination of an icon of modern art. As a screen presence, Louise Bourgeois is magnetic, mercurial and emotionally raw. There is no separation between her life as an artist and the memories and emotions that affect her every day. Her process is on full display in this extraordinary documentary. As an artist, Louise Bourgeois has for six decades been at the forefront of successive new developments, but always on her own powerfully inventive and disquieting terms. In 1982, at the age of 71, she became the first woman to be honored with a major retrospective at New York’s Museum of Modern Art. In the decades since, she has created her most powerful and persuasive work that has been exhibited, studied and lectured on worldwide. Filmed with unparalleled access between 1993 and 2007, Louise Bourgeois: The Spider, the Mistress and the Tangerine is a comprehensive and dramatic documentary of creativity and revelation. It is an intimate, human and educational engagement with an artist’s world.

Although at times obscured by the artist's celebrity, the art of Tracey Emin is serious and focussed, challenging and at times startlingly beautiful. In this film, she speaks frankly about her career, the craft of her immensely varied work, and the immediate, personal themes with which she engages: autobiography, memory, desire, and identity.

http://www.vernissage.tv | Opening reception of the exhibition Tracey Emin. 20 Years at the Kunstmuseum Bern (Museum of Fine Arts) in Bern, Switzerland. With statements by Tracey Emin and curator Kathleen Bühler.
Tracey Emin is one of the most famous and controversial British contemporary artists. Tracey Emin (born in London in 1963) became known in the field of Young British Artists (YBA). She gained a degree of notoriety with her uncompromising personal works. In her home country Tracey Emin is a celebrity. Her works are being collected by famous personalities and she is a welcome guest on parties and an interviewee on TV. There are even Tracey Emin songs.
The current retrospective, 20 Years, at the Kunstmuseum Bern is the most comprehensive Tracey Emin exhibition to date. This first big retrospective, put together by the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh, is also Tracey Emins very first solo exhibition in Switzerland. The show charts her career from the late 1980s to the present day.
Highlights of the exhibition include My Bed, perhaps the artists most celebrated work (comprising her unmade bed, surrounded by the debris of her everyday life), which caused a scandal when it was shown on the occasion of the Turner Prize-exhibition in 1998. Other works in which she refers to her sexual past, her lack of schooling, her abortions as well as her affinity with alcohol are not less provocative. The exhibition shows the full range of Emins work in an exceptionally wide range of media: from her famous appliquéd blankets to video; from neons and installation to her intensely personal paintings and drawings.
This video provides a exhibition walk-through and an introduction by the curator of the exhibition, Kathleen Bühler.

Visual Resistance
Visual Resistance is a collective of artists and activists based in New York City that uses art as a tool for social change.
In 2007, we merged with the radical art distro JustSeeds to form a national printmakers’ cooperative. JustSeeds.org features an online store featuring radical prints, books, zines, and posters. It also features a blog on radical culture which is the new online home of our old blog.
=================Justseeds/Visual Resistance Artists' Cooperative is a decentralized community of artists who have banded together to both sell their work online in a central location and to collaborate with and support each other and social movements. Our website is not just a place to shop, but also a destination to find out about current events in radical art and culture. Our blog covers political printmaking, socially engaged street art, and culture related to social movements. We believe in the power of personal expression in concert with collective action to transform society.

Vintage Vinyl Records in St. Louis is proud to offer Abbie Hoffman’s long out of print Yippie classic, Steal This Book, on its web site. Read it, download it, copy it, distribute it, burn it, whatever you want--at least you can now get it FOR FREE. Before Hoffman died, he gave a copy of his book to co-conspirator Dr. Bill Hartel and instructed him to do with it what he wanted; with the rise of the internet, the book has now found its logical home. In observance of the Democratic National Convention, and in memory of The Chicago Seven, Dr. Bill Hartel has decided that the time is now for Steal This Book’s authorized cyber-debut.
