A response to the rise of old skool styling in our contemporary culture, this interdisciplinary exhibition brings together nine Australian artists each critically examining of old skool stylings and personal implications.

In the here and now, old skool rules aspects of skating (thanks to films such as Dogtown and Z-boys and Concrete Wave magazine); music (bands like Interpol are channelling Joy Division and Echo and the Bunnymen); and contemporary art (some of Australia's most celebrated artists have been occupying themselves with the stuff of their youth).

Old Skool (never lose that feeling) investigates the productivity of old skool formations to generate fan-based practices, products and personae while highlighting local subcultures and trends through works that explore art, music, film and fashion.

Opening: Wednesday 5 December, 6pm

Old Skool Forum: Friday 7 December, 6pm in PICA's Performance Space

The arrest of Governor Bligh, 1808

Politics & Power: Bligh's Sydney Rebellion 1808

On 26 January 1808, William Bligh, fourth governor of New South Wales, was deposed by the New South Wales Corps and placed under arrest. This was a momentous event for the young Colony, just twenty years to the day after the landing of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove. It was the first and only time military intervention has been used to overthrow a government on Australian soil.

The causes of this act have long been a subject of contention among historians. It does seem clear, though, that the personalities of William Bligh and John Macarthur were significant factors.

Politics and Power: Bligh’s Sydney Rebellion 1808 presents this story through the original pictures, manuscripts and printed works of the time.

Open: 21 January 2008 – 27 April 2008

Sidney Nolan A New Retrospective

http://www.artgallery.nsw.gov.au/sub/nolan/home.html
Sidney Nolan A New Retrospective
2 November 2007 to 3 February 2008

Discover the genius of Sidney Nolan, one of Australia’s greatest painters, in this major survey of his celebrated career and extraordinary life.

Nolan transformed our view of the Australian landscape, creating spectacular and original compositions. His work was unpredictable, imaginative and poetic and led him to become our first internationally acclaimed artist.

The exhibition includes many of Nolan’s finest masterpieces which have become indelible icons of 20th century Australian art – the famed Ned Kelly works, early St Kilda and Wimmera paintings, the spectacular Riverbend landscape and Burke and Wills leaving Melbourne. It also features magnificent works from private collections which have rarely been seen by the public.

Drawing on the significant influence music and poetry had during his life, the exhibition’s audio guide and events feature poetry readings, original recordings and personal reflections by Nolan.
