From 15to 20 May, the 29th edition of the KunstRAI will take place in Amsterdam. For the first time in twenty years KunstRAI will again be organized by theKunstbeurs Foundation. Schmidt is one of two artists highlighted in the latest show at the new space opened by several artists from the graffiti collective Primary Flight (Typoe, Books IIII Bischof and Chris O) in the Design District, this one called “Lucid.” She had in fact worked here in Miami with a Fountainhead residency, so some of her scenes are of Miami avenues, along with those of her native Hamburg.





Schmidt calls her artworks urbanscapes—they refer to places that generate themselves from nonplaces, she says, from the transit zones of the city, traffic interchanges, road systems, crossroads and deserted old industrial brick buildings.

Icelandic Printmakers

The Icelandic Printmaker’s Association (also known as the Printmakers Union) in its current form was established in 1969 however it was originally established in 1954. The Association runs its own gallery and studio in the centre of Reykjavik. The gallery is open Thursdays - Sundays 2-6 pm. There are around 70 members who have each been through a professional application process.

Index is an independent art space owned and run by Index - The Swedish Contemporary Art Foundation. It is a site for art production and distribution, a place where artistic and audience related experiments are carried out. White Cube was set up by Jay Jopling in 1993 as a project room for contemporary art. Although it was one of the smallest exhibition spaces in Europe, it was arguably one of most influential commercial galleries of the past decade. Situated on the second floor of 44 Duke Street, St James’s, one of London’s most traditional art dealing streets, White Cube, Duke Street was, literally, a simple white cube, a room within a room, designed by the architect Claudio Silvestrin.

The central concern when establishing the programme was to create an intimate space in which an artist could present a single important work of art or a coherent body of work within a focused environment, an idea that in some way, stemmed from the memorable experience of Walter de Maria’s ‘Earth Room’ in New York. The programme was singular among commercial galleries in that an artist was invited to exhibit only once. Since its inception, the gallery mounted exhibitions of work by many leading international and British artists including Franz Ackermann, Miroslaw Balka, Chuck Close, Tracey Emin, Katharina Fritsch, Mona Hatoum, Damien Hirst, Gary Hume, Ellsworth Kelly, Julie Mehretu, Doris Salcedo, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Luc Tuymans and Jeff Wall. White Cube, Duke Street closed in 2002.

Renew Newcastle

Renew Newcastle has been established to find short and medium term uses for buildings in Newcastle's CBD that are currently vacant, disused, or awaiting redevelopment.

Renew Newcastle aims to find artists, cultural projects and community groups to use and maintain these buildings until they become commercially viable or are redeveloped. Renew Newcastle is not set up to manage long term uses, own properties or permanently develop sites but to generate activity in buildings until that future long term activity happens.

Renew Newcastle was founded to help solve the problem of Newcastle's empty CBD. While the long term prospects for the redevelopment of Newcastle's CBD are good, in the meantime many sites are boarded up, falling apart, vandalised or decaying because they are is no short term for use them and no one taking responsibility for them.

Renew Newcastle has been set up to clean up these buildings and get the city active and used again.

White Rabbit - Sydney

The White Rabbit Gallery is a new gallery space in Sydney's Chippendale, displaying contemporary art from China. The collection of more than 450 post-2000 works by contemporary Chinese artists has been accumulated over 10 years by Judith Neilson, the wife of the Platinum Asset Management co-founder Kerr Neilson. After years in storage, the works have finally taken their place inside the White Rabbit Gallery, one of numerous privately funded public museums soon to open in Australia. With free admission and no commercial sales, they exist to exhibit the wealth of private collections.

CRAWL

Crawl was started in January 2007 by Nicholas Hudson-Ellis in response to a need within the Artist-Run-Initiative (ARI) community for a new type of arts organisation. An organisation that exists to promote ARIs and the artists who they exhibit.

In the world of the commercial art galleries, there is an abundance of press coverage and cash to go around. But within the ARI community, the very group of people who need the most support, and indeed who produce the most engaging and avant-garde work there is limited support.

The aim of Crawl is to provide a central resource for artists, students and anybody interested in the ARI community to find out what is happening in ARIs all around Australia.

Crawl is open for any Artist-Run-Initiative to join, and together we can build a new arts organisation to support our community.

Firstdraft Emerging Arts Writers Program

Firstdraft is pleased to announce the new Firstdraft Emerging Arts Writers Program. The Emerging Arts Writers Program has been developed by Firstdraft in collaboration with runway in order to provide support for emerging arts writers in Australia and generate structured opportunities for critical dialogue surrounding contemporary art practice. Firstdraft and runway aim to encourage excellence in arts writing practice and increase professional development opportunities for emerging arts writers through a process of mentorship and the provision of remunerated publishing opportunities.

We are now calling for applications for the 2nd half of 2009 Emerging Arts Writers Program.

The program includes a 3-month writing mentorship with an established arts writer. Firstdraft and runway will negotiate the mentorship with your nominated arts writer on your behalf.

The program also provides:

· Publication of a critical review, interview or short essay in runway

· Printed publication to accompany an exhibition of your choice in the second half of the 2009 Firstdraft exhibition program

· The opportunity to interview Firstdraft Studio artists to be published on the Firstdraft Studio blog and/or the annual Firstdraft Studio Publication

· Writers’ fee of $500

· Critical dialogue and discussion with Firstdraft artists and directors and runway board over a 3-month period

FREE HELP!

An information day for second half of 2009 applicants will be held at Firstdraft Gallery on Saturday 25 April from 3pm. Come and get some info and tips on how to write a killer application for Firstdraft. Hear from Firstdraft Directors, as well as artists and curators who have recently completed the exhibition, curators and studio residents program. We will also be launching the Emerging Arts Writers Program.

Firstdraft is a non-profit gallery run on a voluntary basis by a group of practising artists and curators. It is one of the longest running and most successful artist-run spaces in Australia. Firstdraft asserts the importance of contemporary art production, dissemination and discussion in society, providing a stimulating exhibition space that is professional and accessible for a diverse range of artistic practices and projects.

The deadline for proposals to Firstdraft's Jun-Dec 2009 Program is Friday 15 May 2009.

Emerging Curators Program:
• A three-week exhibition in the whole gallery (including promotion and opening costs).
• Access to and assistance with Firstdraft's equipment and resources.
• Funding and assistance for the production of a small catalogue to accompany the
show and towards curatorial costs.
